About the Club

Pembroke Hamilton Club, more commonly known as PHC, is an organization that has gone through many transformations, with the earliest accounts of the club’s archery and sailing activities dating back to the late 1890s. In these earlier years, PHC was an elite yachting club on the site of what is now the Visitors Service Bureau, near Albouy’s Point. It later moved to where the Imperial Hotel was on Church Street and later to the site now occupied by the Vasco Da Gama Club on Reid Street. After that, the club moved to its current location on Reid Street – which the club still owns.

In 1950 the club made a petition to the Legislature of the Islands of Bermuda for Incorporation of the club. On June 28th, 1950 the club was incorporated by way of the Pembroke-Hamilton Club Act, 1950, which allowed the club to own property in its name, invest under its name, and also limited the liability of its members to the number of subscriptions due to the club for their membership. It was in the late 1950s that PHC made the transition from a drop-in social club for billiards and cards to a more established community club for sporting activities. It acquired the stadium in Warwick, which was used for everything from motocross, Saturday night horse racing and a golf driving range, to most commonly being used for football and cricket.

For a time the club retained its presence on Reid Street, in addition to the stadium, but this put a strain on resources and it was decided to move all activities to Warwick and lease the city property. The move, which took place in the late 1970s, caused great upheaval and many members decided to leave the club rather than make the transition to Warwick. The move eventually proved to be successful, reducing the strain on resources and growing the club’s sporting programs.

Over the years PHC has seen many highly distinguished members of its management – it has included figures like Sir E.T. Richards, Dr James King, James Browne, and Sir John W. Swan.

Our society is built on the premise of communal activity and interaction in order to survive and thrive. Member clubs and community clubs serve a vital role by encouraging the sharing of ideas and knowledge and supporting the resulting activities. This is the cornerstone of the Pembroke Hamilton Club. PHC is most synonymous with football, boasting its second-to-none Youth Program and silver-clad Senior Team, but also participates in cricket, softball, and commercial netball.

The Club has a proud culture, not only by way of its sporting endeavours but its support of the community at large. The people are what make the club, the people are the club.

Pride. Humility. Community. WE ARE PHC!
